Background The Yorkshire Building Society is the second largest building society in the UK. Its headquarters are in Bradford but it has branches across the UK. Yorkshire was founded in 1864 as the Huddersfield Equitable Permanent Benefit Building Society. Since, it has expanded through a series of mergers. – It took over the Haywards Heath Building Society in 1992 and the Gainsborough Building Society in 2001 – In 2008, they merged with the Barnsley Building Society and decided to keep the Barnsley brand in order to keep existing customers – In 2010 Yorkshire merged with Chelsea Building Society, which also retains its own branding – Yorkshire Building Society acquired Norwich and Peterborough in 2011 though the N&P has a separate and distinct brand – In 2011 Yorkshire bought the Egg savings and mortgage business from Citi Key facts The Yorkshire today forms the core of the Yorkshire Building Society Group, which comprises; Chelsea Building Society, Norwich and Peterborough Building Society, Barnsley Building Society, Accord Mortgages, and Egg Banking. All brands (except Egg), have a distinctive and active presence in the UK. The Yorkshire currently provides financial services both directly and through a network of around 220 branches and 94 associated agencies.
